The highest peak in the Cascades and the 21st most prominent mountain in the world, Mount Rainier rises over 14,000 feet from its lowest point to its summit. On March 2nd 1899, President William McKinley established Mount Rainier National Park as America’s fifth national park. Congress dedicated the new park ā€œfor the benefit and enjoyment of the peopleā€ and ā€œfor the preservation from injury or spoliation of all timber, mineral deposits, natural curiosities, or wonders within said park, and their retention in their natural condition.ā€
